For the sake of the sake. The latter pronounced sockee. Sake is a Japanese drink, for those of you who don't know already, rice wine to be more exact. I had my first encounter last weekend and pondering the night today, I have realized, this is my new favorite drink. Not sake alone, but with a mixture of beer in which I will get into later. Sake is strange. If I had to describe its taste to you, the best way to do it is to say it taste like dirty socks. When I first heard this, I imagined myself never enjoying the drink. But I was assured by a friend that it is in a good way that it tastes like dirty socks. Which is true. Sake alone is okay, but a sake bomb, the japanese version of a boilermaker, is excellent. You place chopsticks upon the top of a beer glass which contains beer (appx. 3 ounces) and place a shot of sake on the chopsticks. This is followed by the group of people ensuing the journey, and yourself pounding the table, the shot of sake falls into the beer and you slam the beer. Sounds fun right? It is. But as an added bonus, which I participated in on Saturday, you can make up rituals before pounding the table including but not limited to, hand clapping, swirling your beer, pounding the glass, shouting screaming as long as the end result involves you somehow drinking a sweet mixture of beer and sake. If you have not experienced a night of drinking sake, I insist you have one. So to all, drink up, drink down, laugh, cry, but always have a cheers to liver failure. Goodbye.
